I learned that there is an image standard (container format) called HEIF.
HEIF may become the mainstream image format in the near future.
The presence of Webp developed by Google is likely to diminish.
A quick survey revealed the following:
- The HEIF container format is a new standard that has been standardized to identify and group multiple image files.
- HEIF container format uses .heif or .heic extension
- Up to twice the compression rate for still images
- New image format whose specifications have just been finalized in 2015
The support status on desktop OS and smartphones is as follows.
- Available on Apple iOS 11 or later (iPhone 7 or later)
- Available for Microsoft Windows 10 v1809
- Available on Android 9 Pie
The software support status is as follows.
- Windows photo
- IrfanView 4.52
- XnView (version unknown)
- GIMP 2.10
Timing of HEIF adoption by major manufacturers
Here's when Apple, Microsoft, and Efanview introduced HEIF. Google has made HEIF available from Android 9 Pie.Apple
Apple now supports HEIF from the product it shipped in the fall of 2017 (iOS11). The format is now used by default. (According to me)Microsoft
Microsoft has announced support for HEIF containers as a new feature in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17123 (MARCH 16, 2018), so that HEIF format will be available from Windows 10 v1803 for consumers. It seems that it had become.I don't know the exact details, as some articles mention that it was available from Windows 10 v1809, but my W10 v1809 photo was able to display HEIF images.

Try loading the .heic file extension with IrfanView
I tried to see if the HEIF file can be viewed with the combination of IrfanView 4.52 (64-bit) and the latest plug-in set (64-bit), but unfortunately I could not view it because a decoding error was displayed.
