What should I do if I can't access my file server (old NAS)?

,How to use

ばあちゃん I no longer have access to Buffalo's NAS (HD-H250LAN) I purchased more than 10 years ago.

The client OS is Windows 10.

NAS is a network storage designed for use over a network.

[Features of NAS]
  • No USB connection required
  • Can be installed in your favorite location
  • File sharing on multiple PCs
  • If you back up the PC data to the NAS, the data will be secured even if the local drive crashes
  • Can be accessed on the go
  • If you build a RAID, it will be safe even in the case of a crash

Well, the main subject.

The reason why I could not access the NAS was SMBv1 (server message block version 1).

SMBv1 is a protocol developed by Microsoft to realize file sharing and printer sharing.

It is not installed on Windows 10 v1709 and later versions due to an outdated design and known vulnerabilities.

Instead, SMBv3 is installed.

Cause

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (v1709) and Windows Server version 1709 (RS3) no longer install the SMBv1 protocol by default.

Due to this specification change, communication with the NAS could not be performed at the timing of updating to Windows 10 v1709.

Installing SMBv1 on Windows 10 should solve the problem.

How to install SMBv1

*Microsoft deprecates the use of SMBv1.

You can install SMBv1 using "Windows Features".

W10> Settings> Apps> Programs and Features> Enable or disable Windows features

[procedure]
  1. Check " SMB 1.0/CIFS Client"
  2. OK Click on the
  3. Restart your PC
  4. End

Enable or disable Windows features

Afterword

Microsoft has developed CIFS as a successor to SMB, but it has not spread yet, and SMB is popular with many users.

I think that SMB is useful because SMB can be used from operating systems other than Windows, such as Linux, by using free software called Samba.

Windows 10 Pro April 2018 (1803) can be accessed in the following ways:

Start Menu> Windows System Tools> Control Panel> Programs and Features> Enable or Disable Windows Features

technical data

Since 2007, this version has been replaced by the SMBv2 and later protocols. Microsoft announced the deprecation of the SMBv1 protocol in 2014.
