How to set up a public NTP server on your PC

Windows OS such as Windows 10 has a function to synchronize time using NTP, and it is enabled by default, so you may not know that the setting screen is prepared.

NTP: Network Time Protocol | Time Synchronization Protocol

NTP is a protocol developed to synchronize the time of the clock of a computer device such as a personal computer or server with the clock of an NTP server installed on the Internet, and has the function of correcting the delay caused by passing through a network. You can use NTP to keep your computer's clock at the correct time.

The accuracy of the computer's internal clock is important

If the clock on your computer is out of sync, the file creation timestamp will not be recorded correctly, and the time series will be incorrect.

You may see a display such as “10 minutes 30 seconds left” on the website, but since the calculation of the remaining time is often calculated with javascript etc. based on the internal clock of the PC, the internal clock is You need to set the exact time.

And the internal clock of the PC does not have the accuracy like a wristwatch, and it can be understood if the NTP setting is turned off and observed, but when one day passes, the time is shifted back and forth.

Problems with Microsoft's official time server

I wrote at the beginning that the Internet time setting of Windows OS is enabled, but there is a problem with the NTP server specified in the initial setting.

The default NTP server, such as Windows 10, is time.windows.com, but since it is used by most Windows operating systems worldwide, it tends to have frequent access and frequent timeouts.

And by default, Windows 10 only adjusts the time to the specified time once a day, so if that time is missed, the time will not be adjusted that day.

If your computer shuts down at the time adjustment time or your session with time.windows.com times out, the time adjustment will be carried over to the next day.

It is possible to start the local group policy editor and set it to perform multiple times per day, but you are anxious about the time.windows.com timeout.

In order to avoid timeout, I think that it is better to use the public NTP server or the NTP server of the provider that you use.

This article contains information on the public NTP server and instructions on setting up the NTP server on Windows 10.

It also describes the reason why you should not use the Fukuoka University NTP server.

Public NTP server information

For domestic NTP service, NICT, Internet Multifeed is recommended.

Outside of Japan, isn't Google at the time of trouble?

NICT

NICT: National Institute of Information and Communications Technology | National Institute of Information and Communications Technology

The NTP server ntp.nict.jp provided by NICT is the best recommendation.

Although NICT is a legal personality, it is the only public research institute specializing in the field of information communication where the country is involved, the radio clock tower is operated by this organization, and the public NTP server is directly connected to Japan Standard Time doing.

However, it can not be ruled out that the budget will be reduced and maintenance of server devices will not be able to continue if things like the sort of business done at the time of the Democratic Party administration are reproduced.

Mr. Rensuke's "Is it a second no good?" (꒪⌓꒪)

Internet Multifeed

In the private sector, Internet Multifeed's ntp.jst.mfeed.ad.jp (Time information service for Public) is recommended.

Since Internet Multifeed operates the Internet exchange (IX: Internet eXchange) business JPNAP, the sense of stability is outstanding.

JPNAP: Japan Network Access Point

JPNAP is set up in Tokyo and Osaka, and is a connection point where ISPs (providers) and data center operators are interconnected.

Considering the physical distance from the user, the provider is closer to the user than JPNAP, so I think the provider's NTP service has an advantage.

Google

I think that Google Public NTP service time.google.com is good overseas.

As with Microsoft, I'm concerned about the number of users accessing it, but because it is a company with huge profits, capital investment funds are abundant in a wealthy place.

Is there any concern that Google may suddenly drop its service, such as Google Reader, Google+, etc?

NTP server registered in Windows 10

In order to be able to load balance time.windows.com on Windows 10, there are multiple registered NTP servers of domain nist.gov of US governmental organization.

NIST is an organization called the National Institute of Standards and Technology, so it's similar to NICT in Japan.

Which NTP server do you use?

If your provider offers NTP service, use it.

Otherwise, if you know the network path of your provider, select the NTP server closest to the WAN side of the provider.

Roughly speaking, select the NTP server installed closest to your place of residence.

If you do not know the physical distance, I think that NICT is good.

Let's not use the NTP server of Fukuoka University

Fukuoka University's NTP server clock.nc.fukuoka-u.ac.jp is determined to be stopped in the future because the increase in traffic has exceeded the limit and it has interfered with the normal operation of the campus network. .

Don't let outsiders use not only the Fukuoka University NTP server, but the NTP server that the university has set up.

Steps to Change Internet Time Settings on Windows 10

To set the Internet Time for Windows 10, open the Control Panel, display Date and Time, and select Internet Time.

In order to launch the control panel, it is quick to launch Run (Win + R), enter name: control and click OK .

W10> Control panel: Small icons> Date and time> Internet time

Since the "Date and time" screen has three tabs, select "Internet Time" and enter the NTP server host name in the box next to "Server" on the screen that appears.

When setting up the NICT NTP server, enter server: ntp.nict.jp and click OK .
