MATS folder in the root of the C drive
Sometimes, you may find a folder named MATS in the root of your PC's C drive.
In Windows 7, MATS was a backup folder generated when running the system repair tool "Microsoft easy fix," but MATS also exists in Windows 10/11.
Microsoft easy fix was a system tool for diagnosing and resolving issues caused by third-party software affecting Microsoft products. In Windows 10/11, the functionality equivalent to Microsoft easy fix is incorporated as a module within the "Troubleshooting Tool."
MATS can be deleted
When you run the troubleshooting tool in Windows 10/11, it is believed that "MATS" is generated. MATS can be deleted.
MATS folder structure
A snapshot of the MATS folder that exists in our Windows 11.
c:\MATSx (for transitional purposes, we add an x at the end to observe if there are any defects).
Identity of MATS folders.
MATS > FileBackup > (Multiple backup files)
- FileBackup
Program Files|Users|Windows
FileBackup is a backup folder by name. And you can see the names of Windows system folders such as Program Files, Windows and Users.
Therefore, the conclusion is that MATS is a backup folder.
Removed after follow-up
Renamed MATS to [MATSx] instead of deleting it out of the blue and have been observing for several weeks. So far no problems have been identified.
Documentation
From everything I am seeing, it should be fine to delete this folder.
That being said, let's rename it first to see if we get any bad behavior. If not, then we can delete it without any risk of harm.

The Easy Fix solution has been discontinued. Instead, you can upgrade to Windows 10 and get a properly built in troubleshooting tool.
